Tune In http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Talking-Points-Memo/~3/289630629/194808.php I can't say there's going to be a huge amount of suspense. But join us at 7:30 when we'll be bringing you live election results from the West Virginia primary (aka, Sen. Clinton's A West Virginia apotheosis). More suspensefully, starting at 8 PM we'll be bringing you live results from the special election in Mississippi's 1st district. This is the race to replace Rep. Roger Wicker (R-MS) and it's similar to the race Dems recently won in Louisiana -- a blood red district (even redder than the one Rep. Don Cazayoux (D-LA) won) where the Democrat, Travis Childers (D-MS) is running neck and neck with Republican Greg Davis (R-MS).
To some perspective, in 2004, George Bush won this district 62% to 37% in 2004. So the fact that the Democrat is even in the hunt is pretty astounding. Like I said, the polls close at 8 PM Eastern.

Idle question If you were going to insert a detective into one of Shakespeare's tragedies, would you go for a character like Philip Marlowe [1] or one like Miss Marple [2]? The Chandleresque character strikes me as more likely to live to the end of the story but Marple could be played as a kind of wise fool.
1: I started off with Hammett's Continental Op but Marlowe's speech patterns are more amusing to me.
2: Or Tommy and Tuppance if you want the detectives to have a confederate with which to converse. |

Trends http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Americablog/~3/289590120/trends.html Overall, the graphs show that since Super Tuesday, at the beginning of February (over 3 months ago), Hillary has been losing ground to Obama. That's a clear trend, clear momentum, in his direction, and it hasn't changed, even after Rev. Wright, even after Hillary "finding her voice." From ABC, via Ben Smith: 1. Delegates won in the primaries and caucuses: 2. Superdelegates - i.e., members of Congress, Governors, DNC officials. (Note: I added the last data point, for May 13 (today)): 3. Total delegates (Pledged and Super): 4. Popular vote:

Gypsy skirts. C’mon, you know you hate them. http://justinelarbalestier.com/blog/?p=1159
I can’t believe no one’s voted against gypsy skirts either. Mis-matched flaps of coloured cotton (or worse synthethic) piled layer on top of layer in an unholy mess. What’s to like, people?
Also the next person who writes to me defending their hideous taste in liking ballet flats/espadrilles/formal shorts/shrugs/other fashion atrocity will be hit with a bad fashion curse. That’s right I will hex you so you never look good in clothes again. EVER.
Though, come to think of it, perhaps you’re all writing to me to defend these fashion atrocities because you’ve already been hit with the bad fashion curse. Hmmm. I will have to think further on a better punishment . . .
And for those who seem unable to find the poll: It’s to your right. In the sidebar. See? Where it says “Polls”. You’re welcome. |

Thud: ILE Words: 1348 Total words: 63842 Files: 4 Tea: Spring tea Music: no music, didn't feel like RSI: not very good Reason for stopping: end of bit.
Getting on with it.
It's so odd checking details for a date I remember in the way I would if it were a historical period.
It's a lovely day today, and the leaves are opening on the trees across the way so that when I'm working on Caliban and look up, I can almost see more leaf than sky. |

Soldiers of God http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Talking-Points-Memo/~3/289576010/194782.php Following up on what I mentioned in the post below, now that McCain backer John Hagee is trying to walk back his attacks on the Catholic Church, I'm curious whether he's going to have any follow up on what he claims is God's embrace of Islamic terrorists creating a "bloodbath" in the United States. As Hagee explains, it's not Iran or al Qaeda behind the Jihadists plotting mass casualty terrorist attacks against the US. It's God himself.
As you can see in this video clip, Hagee says that God is using Islamic terrorists to create a "bloodbath" in the US in order to punish us for supporting the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
I'm dying to hear McCain's campaign get asked about this. But so far it hasn't happened.

Bad Girl Goodies http://scalzi.com/whatever/?p=749
A while back I took a picture of Athena in one of her more glowery moods and Photoshopped it for my own amusement, and recently Krissy suggested that she’d like the resulting Photoshop on a t-shirt or mug. So I obliged her. Having now performed my uxorial duty, I’m now making the designs available to the rest of you through the magic of Zazzle. If you ever wanted a coffee mug or t-shirt of my daughter doing her best “demon spawn” look, now’s your chance.
Ironically, all profits (I think a dollar or so from each sale) are likely to go to Athena’s college fund. But, you know, honestly, don’t feel obliged. Zazzle prices are moderately expensive, and Athena’s college fund is doing perfectly fine these days. And I think the market for Athena paraphernalia is, rightly, small. But it might be fun for her to go to school with one of these shirts on.

Everything is contained in something else Okay, things are in other things. The pies are in the oven; the leftover raw pastry is in Mac (milk! lard! flour! nom-nom-nom! It's probably awfully bad for him, but I do get tired of yelling); the leftover pork-meats in their herby goodness are in the bolognese sauce (yes, honestly. It's traditional: beef and pork, in combo, and cook for hours). The marrow chutney is in abeyance until tomorrow, because I have quit.
Not yet all the wine is in me, but we're getting there. Also, yummy crispy porky snacks.
Calm. Calm is in me, too. Until tomorrow. Maybe something will happen, by tomorrow? |
